How to Care for Your Teak Shower Bench

One of the most common questions we hear is, “How do I care for a teak shower bench?” The next question is usually, “How often should I clean it?” With the right routine, your teak products can continue looking beautiful for years.

While teak is naturally resistant to bacteria and mildew, soap residue, minerals, and other impurities from your water may eventually create buildup. Teakworks4u recommends performing routine cleanings each time you clean your shower or bathroom, or whenever you notice buildup.

Teak has a naturally slip-resistant surface, but soap buildup can compromise this over time. To keep your piece looking its best, we recommend a deep cleaning at least every 3 months, or more often depending on use.

Quick Cleaning

Apply water with a soft bristle brush. A mild soap solution can also be helpful. Lightly scrub the teak surface and underside, then rinse with clean water and allow it to air dry.

Deep Cleaning

For a more thorough cleaning, use a teak-safe cleaner and scrub the surface gently. Routine deep cleaning helps remove buildup without stripping the wood of its natural oils or non-slip characteristics.

We recommend deep cleaning at least every 3 months, or more frequently for heavily used shower and bathroom pieces.

The Teakworks4u Teak Cleaning Kit includes everything needed for a deeper clean, including an 8 oz. bottle of cleaning solution, nylon and stainless steel scrubbing brushes, an 8 oz. bottle of conditioning oil, an oil applicator, gloves, and a rag for cleanup.

With regular cleaning, your teak products will continue to look great for many years.

For mildew or discoloration that has accumulated over time, we recommend using a commercial teak cleaner. Teak cleaners are available from boating supply stores, home centers, or directly from Teakworks4u.

Restoring Weathered Teak

If your teak has weathered and you would like to restore it closer to its original finish, it can be done with a little work. Lightly sand the piece using commercial-grade sandpaper. We recommend starting with 80 grit sandpaper and moving up in grit as desired.

As you sand, you will begin to notice the original teak color return. Once finished, remove any dust and apply teak oil to the surface.
